Here’s everything you should know about Volux, the newly FDA-approved injectable.
A well-defined jawline gives off an air of strength, youth and confidence. But not all of us were born with perfectly chiseled cheekbones. And as we age, loss of volume in our cheeks, sagging skin and wrinkles can turn even the sharpest of jaws into jowls. And while well-done contour makeup can be a great short-term solution, it only masks the problem rather than actually solving it. Once upon a time, men and women could only turn to surgical intervention to reclaim the jawline of their youths, but that’s no longer the case. Now, thanks to Allergan, the producers of BOTOX, there is a non-surgical alternative, Juvéderm Volux XC injectable fillers.
What is Volux?
Juvéderm Volux XC is the first hyaluronic acid-based injectable filler approved by the FDA that specifically targets the jawline. This approval expands the Juvéderm collection of fillers and offers providers more options to address lower face aesthetic concerns.
What does it do?
Basically, Volux defines the jawline. It’s a dermal filler made of hyaluronic acid, similar to what you’d find in other Juvéderm fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally found in our bodies that can hold up to a thousand times its weight in water. Targeting specific areas of the face with Juvéderm treatments will temporarily add volume to those areas. The main differences — besides where you’re injecting Volux — are that Volux has more structure and cohesivity and lift capacity. Volux can:
- Restore lost volume and reduce drooping in the jawline and chin
- Sculpt the chin and jawline
- Improve jawline definition
- Lift and contour the lower face
How does it work?
Hyaluronic acid filler is typically injected deep onto the bone along the jawline and chin to provide more definition. The filler provides structural support and contours the jaw so that it looks more lifted. While it will depend on your specific face shape and how much is suggested to be injected, you’ll notice a difference with even just one syringe.
Who is Volux for?
Anyone over the age of 21 is eligible to receive treatment. Those who have a history of multiple severe allergies or are prone to allergic reactions to lidocaine or the gram-positive bacterial proteins that are found in this filler to stay away from this treatment. If you’ve had allergic reactions to other hyaluronic acid fillers, you’ll also want to be wary. Read complete Juvéderm Volux XC prescribing information.
Are there negative side effects?
You can expect similar side effects to those of other filler treatments, which can include tenderness, swelling, lumps, and bruising, but these will most likely subside in about two weeks. Other possible side effects that could happen with Volux — or any filler — can include infection and vascular occlusion.
If you want to minimize any bruising, stay away from ibuprofen, fish oils, and aspirin. You’ll also want to avoid alcohol or any exercise for at least 24 hours, but always consult with your provider about the aftercare once you get this treatment for the best results.
How long do results last?
Results can be instantaneous and can provide a noticeable difference. Studies on Volux found improvement in jawline definition at six months, with results lasting anywhere from a year to a year and a half.
