Blepharoplasty is the clinical name for upper or lower eyelid cosmetic surgery, which may be performed for aesthetic enhancement of the eyes to create a youthful upper face. In some cases, the eyelids may be droopy, which can cause vision obstruction. All such issues can be corrected with blepharoplasty.
During the pre-op consultation, the surgeon will discuss all aspects of eyelid surgery, determine the patient’s candidacy for lower or upper blepharoplasty or both, and help them make an informed decision.
Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jacob Bloom provides blepharoplasty to patients in Chicago, IL, and surrounding locations in this area of the middle of the country.
Benefits
Blepharoplasty or eyelid lift plastic surgery can help achieve one or more of the following benefits for patients who want to rejuvenate their eyelid appearance and eliminate the old or tired look from the eyes:
- Excess fat deposits around the eyes can create puffiness in the upper lids. This condition can be corrected with upper eyelid surgery.
- Loose skin, wrinkles and creases around the lower eyelids can be reduced with lower eyelid blepharoplasty.
- If the upper eyelid contour is disturbed, causing vision limitations, upper eyelid surgery can be used to address the condition.
- Eyelid surgery can eliminate the bags under the lower eyelids.
- Droopy lower eyelids, which show the white below the iris, can be corrected with lower eyelid surgery.
Candidacy
Any individual above the age of 18, who is suffering from skin laxity around the upper or lower eyelids and wants to restore a rejuvenated eye appearance, may consider blepharoplasty plastic surgery. The candidate should have healthy facial muscle and tissue to achieve desirable results, and should not be suffering from an eye infection or any such eye ailment that could interfere with the surgery.
The patient should have clear goals, positive outlook and realistic expectations in order to achieve satisfactory results. The patient should be a non-smoker or have the commitment to quit smoking several weeks prior to the surgery.
Procedure
The surgeon will perform eyelid surgery using general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on the circumstances of the case. Following anesthesia, the surgeon will create tiny incisions within the natural structures of the eyelid region so that scars do not become obvious later on. Droopy upper lids can be corrected with an incision that enables the surgeon to reposition the excess fats, tighten underlying muscle and tissue, and remove loose skin.
Lower eyelid anomalies may be corrected with an incision that is made just beneath the lower lash line. Excess skin in the lower eyelids will be removed through this incision. Redistribution or removal of excess fat in the lower eyelid can also be done through a transconjuctival incision. The incisions will finally be closed with fine sutures.
Results
Eyelid surgery results will establish gradually as the bruising and swelling resolves over a few days and weeks. The patient will be able to notice a well-defined eyelid and surrounding area. The surgeon will recommend sun protection in the eyelid area to ensure safe outcomes. Profound and stellar cosmetic surgeon Dr. Bloom receives patients from Chicago, IL, and nearby areas for eyelid surgery.
