At times, a person may appear sad, aged, or angry due to old or tired-looking eyes. But it is possible to address these signs of aging around the eyelids effectively with blepharoplasty cosmetic surgery.
Upper and lower eyelid surgery can enhance the functional and aesthetic facets of the eyes. Sometimes a patient may require upper and lower blepharoplasty in combination. Also, the procedures can treat heavily drooping upper eyelids that may be impeding the vision.
Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jacob Bloom provides eyelid lift to patients in Chicago, IL, and surrounding locations.
Blepharoplasty Benefits
- Removes upper eyelid puffiness by eliminating fatty deposits around the eyes with an upper blepharoplasty.
- Eliminates loose skin, lines, and folds around the lower eyelids
- Treats sagging upper eyelids, which may be leading to vision obstruction
- Reduces under-eye bags
- Treats the visible white underneath the iris which may occur due to sagging lower eyelids
Upper Blepharoplasty
Factors such as aging can lead to the eyelid muscles may become loose, and the lid tissue may stretch, causing sagging upper lids and loss of elasticity. As a result, the upper lids look droopy and wrinkled, making a face look older.
Patients experiencing such issues can undergo upper lid lift plastic surgery to address these concerns and restore a more youthful, rested eye appearance. Some patients may experience severely sagging upper lids (ptosis), which may develop along with aging lines over the eyelids.
The eyes may look partially closed with sagging upper lids even when the patient has their eyes open. This distorted eye appearance may occur from an underlying condition called ptosis. Upper blepharoplasty is an effective treatment for these conditions.
The surgeon initiates this procedure by making an incision along the natural eyelid contour crease to ensure that it remains hidden. They will use the incision to remove loose upper lid skin to make it smoother. Afterward, they will close the incision with fine sutures.
Lower Blepharoplasty
The lids may appear puffy and tired due to loose tissue and weakened muscles. On top of this, the eyelid skin can look rough and wrinkled. Lower blepharoplasty can effectively improve this condition.
In this procedure, the surgeon makes an incision either on the skin or inside the eyelid to remove excess skin and reduce the appearance of puffy under-eye bags. They will make the incisions right beneath the eyelid margin to make sure that any future scarring remains discreet.
The surgeon will also tighten the underlying weak muscles through these incisions. If there are excessive fatty deposits in this site, they will eliminate or redistribute the fat to create more youthful-looking eyes.
Transconjunctival Eyelid Surgery
If the patient does not require skin tightening but only needs a reduction in fatty deposits around the eyes, the surgeon may recommend a transconjunctival blepharoplasty. This is a relatively less invasive procedure and is appropriate for patients who do not have significant puffiness in the under-eye region.
Once the patient is under the effect of the anesthesia, the surgeon will make a few tiny incisions inside the lower eyelids to eliminate excess fatty pockets and enhance the appearance of the region. Muscle tightening and skin excision are not an element of this procedure. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Jacob Bloom receives patients from Chicago, IL, and nearby areas for an eyelid lift.
