Skin or Soft Tissue Trauma
Who are you going to call… when you have a skin or soft tissue injury?
Whether it’s a slip of a kitchen knife or your child splitting their chin after a fall, accidents happen. Unfortunately all lacerations can and will leave scars which can be stubborn, and serve as a painful reminder of your previous injuries. When an unexpected injury happens, you will see your best results if it is treated right the first time. Dr. Jacob Bloom at Bloom Plastic Surgery in Chicago and Burr Ridge, IL has become known throughout Chicagoland for his work in these situations.
What’s the best way to seek treatment?
Depending on the cause of the laceration Dr. Bloom can usually address your injury within 24 hours without any negative effects on the final scar. Dr. Bloom will treat these injuries in the office under local anesthesia as long as they are isolated and not associated with other injuries including, broken bones, concussions or other serious medical conditions. We advise that you contact our office at 312.549.8691 to see if your injury is appropriate for an office based repair and if we have any emergency appointments available. While we are not an urgent care we do make every attempt to assist in these challenging situations.
Procedure and Recovery
Once the area is anesthetized, Dr. Bloom will clean the wound and then suture the skin in several layers to reduce tension. Dr. Bloom uses multilayer closure techniques with both absorbable and removable sutures to ensure the best possible aesthetic outcome. In general sutures will be in place for 5-7 days for facial lacerations and 7-14 days for other body areas. Restrictions after the procedure include keeping the area dry and no exercise for 48 hours. Most lacerations only require over-the-counter pain medication for a few days and it’s encouraged to avoid aspirin and other NSAIDs such as Advil or Aleve. In addition, Dr. Bloom and his staff will provide specific aftercare instructions at each stage of your recovery to help guide you. While the injury may be scary, the experienced team at Bloom Plastic Surgery will make sure that your treatment is anything but!
